Breaking Barriers Together: Women in the Asian Space Sector The Republic of Korea has been supporting the United Nations’ Space4Women Landmark Study on Gender Equality in the Space Sector. According to the study’s findings, the Asia region has the lowest level of women’s participation in the space workforce. Recognizing this as a shared regional challenge, this side event aims to provide a platform for regional dialogue and partnership to advance gender equality in the space sector. Part I: Space4Women & Landmark Study on Gender Equality The first session will explore the status of women in the Asian space sector within a broader global context. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) will introduce the Space4Women Project and present the key findings from the Landmark Study on Gender Equality. The session will also feature presentations from space organizations across Asia — PhilSA (Philippines), JAXA (Japan), GISTDA (Thailand), and KARI/KASI (Korea) — sharing their national inputs to Phase I of the Landmark Study. These presentations will provide comparative perspectives on national policies and women’s participation across different institutional and cultural contexts. Part II: Understanding Gender Perceptions in Asia’s Space Sector This session will explore why women remain underrepresented in Asia’s space sector, focusing on gender barrier perceptions as a key factor. It will introduce GISE-Space Asia, an ongoing study led by Korea to quantitatively assess gender perceptions within the regional space workforce. The study’s methodology and pilot findings — including the Korean case and outcomes from the Asia-Pacific Space Generation Workshop — will be shared to illustrate early insights. A panel discussion will follow, inviting participants to exchange experiences and perspectives on how such perceptions influence women’s participation in the space sector. * Light refreshments will be served throughout the event. * A networking lunch co-hosted by KARI and SWF will be held immediately after the program, followed by a side event organized by SWF. |

SWF will host a Handbook for New Actors in Space side event during this year’s Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) in Cebu, Philippines. The increased availability of space technology and capabilities has both advantages and disadvantages. It has spurred innovation, lowering of costs, and greater access to capabilities and services available from satellites for all. However, the growth in space activities and the influx of new actors also has the potential to exacerbate many of the current threats to the long-term sustainable use of space, such as on-orbit crowding, radio-frequency interference, the proliferation of space debris, and the chances of an incident in space sparking or escalating geopolitical tensions on Earth. Access to space now and even more so, in the future, will be affected by these challenges. This new edition of Secure World Foundation’s Handbook for New Actors in Space focuses on showcasing space sector trends, evolving policies, and new challenges to space sustainability. New research areas include the effects of anti-satellite testing on low Earth orbit and global governance attempts to address this threat, expansion of commercial cislunar and lunar activities, and the advancement of non-traditional technologies such as active debris removal and on-orbit servicing. Global efforts are underway to address space sustainability challenges including a number of industry working groups for standards and best practices, technical certification initiatives, and changes and expansion of the mandates of international governance institutions such as the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the International Telecommunications Union. Asia-Pacific actors have an important role to play in these efforts, and this workshop will highlight pathways for engagement, regulatory considerations, and operational best practices. The workshop will be split into three sections of 20 minutes each covering the international framework for space activities, national space policy and administration, and responsible operations in space respectively. Each section will begin with a ten-minute lecture by a prominent regional expert on that topic followed by a structured discussion for participants. The workshop aims to further knowledge of these topics among the participants. They will walk away with a better understanding of the common issues and challenges regarding space sustainability as well as knowledge about resources available for further research and support. Participants will also receive a physical copy of the Handbook. It will take place at the Movenpick Hotel, which is a ten-minute walk from the conference main site. It will be preceded but a networking lunch, co-hosted by KARI and SWF. |
