- SAFE & Climate R3 workshops successfully held
  Two workshops were successfully organized by APRSAF at the
  Novotel Perth Langley Hotel in Perth, Australia.
The fourth Space Applications For Environment (SAFE)
  workshop was conducted on May 22 and 23, with 37
  participants. The progress of five ongoing prototype
  projects was reported, and three new prototype projects from
  Cambodia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh were approved.

  2. GCOM-W1 & KOMPSAT-3 successfully launched
  //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  On May 18, 2012, Japanese Global Change Observation Mission
  1st - Water "SHIZUKU" (GCOM-W1) and the Korean Multi-purpose
  Satellite 3 (KOMPSAT-3) were successfully launched by the
  H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 21. 
GCOM-W1 is the first satellite of the GCOM series, and it
  carries the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2
  (AMSR2) - an instrument to observe water-related parameters
  such as precipitation, water vapor, sea surface wind speed,
  sea surface temperature, soil moisture, and snow depth.
KOMPSAT-3 carries an electro-optical camera, which will
  provide high-resolution images. The acquired data will be
  used for public safety purposes, land and resources
  management, and disaster monitoring.

  3. Collaboration between Indonesia and Japan for small satellite development
  //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  On April 19, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space
  of Indonesia (LAPAN) announced a conference of Indonesian
  organizations, including LAPAN, and Japanese institutions
  such as Hokkaido University to discuss cooperation on a
  small satellite development project at the Bogor
  Agricultural University (IPB) in Indonesia. Development of
  short/long-term cooperation plans, exchange of information
  on small satellite development, and essential points for
  cooperation on these programs were discussed at the
  conference. Indonesia and Japan confirmed the possibility of
  cooperation for the development of small remote sensing
  satellites.

  4. KAZCOSMOS and GISTDA sign an agreement on space programs
  //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
  On April 28, the National Space Agency of the Republic of
  Kazakhstan (KAZCOSMOS) announced the signing of an agreement
  with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development
  Agency of Thailand (GISTDA) regarding cooperation on space
  programs. Dr. Talgat Mussabayev, Chairman of KAZCOSMOS, and
  Dr. Somchet Thinaphong, Chairman of GISTDA Executive Board
  signed the agreement during Dr. Thinaphong's
  visit to Kazakhstan.

  5. LAPAN's activity targets for 2012-2014
  //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia
(LAPAN) has announced its activity targets for 3 years,
until the end of the year 2014. Four key target areas are
aerospace technologies, remote sensing, atmosphere science
study, and space policy. LAPAN aims to make significant
contributions to the nation by promoting the development of
aerospace technologies and supporting space resource
management and early-warning/disaster mitigation programs
conducted by the government or private companies.
