  4. Introduction

Nepal is officially known as THE KINGDOM OF NEPAL. It is a landlocked country of southern Asia, bordered on the north by Chinese Tibet and the Himalayas and bounded by India to the east, south, and west. It covers an area of 56,827 square miles (147,181 square km).
Kathmandu is the capital city. Nepal extends for about 500 miles (800 km) from southeast to northwest and for about 90 to 150 miles (140 to 240 km) from north to south. It contains some of the most rugged and difficult mountainous terrain in the world. As a result of years of geographic and self-imposed isolation, Nepal is one of the least-developed nations of the world. The population of Nepal in 1990 was estimated to be 18,910,000.
