Welcome Messasge
To the Invitees to the Disaster-Mitigation WS at MACRES in May 2005
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honour for me to wish all of you Selamat Datang to Malaysia and the Workshop on Disaster Reduction through Effective Space Technology Utilization in Asia and the Pacific Region. It is an honour for Malaysia to be associated with this first APRSAF disaster management event and the hosting of this workshop has again demonstrated the continuous support and commitment of the Malaysian Government
in international and regional efforts aimed at enhancing collaboration to achieve sustainable development through the use of recent technologies. We wish to record our sincere appreciation to the main organizer, JAXA, for the opportunity given to Kuala Lumpur to host this workshop.
The organization of this workshop is timely not only for its technical objective alone, but the most important is to serve as another international gathering that will contribute to greater interaction and understanding among professionals and scientists of different countries, after several recent unfortunate disasters that affecting many human casualties in our region, the most pertinent of which is the Asian Tsunami. The workshop is undoubtedly another example of a challenging regional forum that could be utilized by decision makers and experts from different part of the world to deliberate and implement a concerted effort in the utilization of advanced and sophisticated technologies for the betterment of human kind.
To the participants, we appreciate very much for your strong support and look forwards to your valuable contributions in this workshop. We also wish our guests from overseas a very pleasant and enjoyable stay in this country. You may want to take opportunities to visit around Kuala Lumpur with its new prominent landmarks such as the KLCC twin-tower while it is still the world tallest building, the KL Tower and other interesting places. Garden city Kuala Lumpur, with its LRT and monorail facilities, is also a heaven for international shoppers.
Lastly, may I also take this opportunity to record our sincere thanks to our Japanese counterparts, UN-ESCAP and all members of national Organising Committee, as well as participants and observers, and all parties who have directly or indirectly contributed to the successful organization of this workshop.
Thank you.

Welcome Messasge
To the Invitees to the Disaster-Mitigation WS at MACRES in May 2005
Ladies and Gentlemen,
APRSAF was established in 1993 in response to the declaration adopted at the Asia-Pacific International Space Year Conference (APIC) held in 1992. The purposes of APRSAF were to enhance the development of each country's space program and to exchange views on future cooperation in space activities in the region.
Through APRSAF, we have had various discussions for the last twelve years, and it was very important to know each other well. It, however, can be said that the result of a series of ripe discussions had been received, and APRSAF has entered the time of planning and execution.
As you know, it is still new in our memories that more than 200,000 people were killed by and many are still suffering from the earthquake shook the Sumatra Coast in December 2004 and Tsunami followed the above earthquake.
Since the damage of the above tsunami was so enormous, awareness of the "mitigation" and "disaster prevention" has risen among the Asia-Pacific region residents more than ever.
According to the UN annual statistics, the Asia is the disaster-prone zone where 90% or more of the disaster-victims in the world reside, and it accounts for about 50% of those who die due to the disasters in the world. This fact is, however, hardly known even by the Asians themselves.
I, therefore, would like to point out the usefulness of the images obtained from the satellites as one of the disaster-prevention and disaster-reduction measures on condition that space agencies provide satellite data which can respond to information needs, and translate data into simple and useful information for the end users.
In order to enhance safety in the Asia-Pacific region as much as possible in the future, we should use the APRSAF as one of the most effective avenues to provide necessary assistance to the people in the region through space applications. Achieving safety is so important because safety is the primary factor to achieve "sustainable development" in the region.
In that sense, active exchange of opinions with every participant in the technical workshop to be held at MACRES, Kuala Lumpur, from May 24th through 26th gives us a great pleasure as the Director of the EORC, JAXA, and Dr. Mahmood, the Director of MACRES, who will co-chair at the workshop.
I look forward to meeting all of you in Malaysia. Have a safe journey!
Best regards
