Dr. John Mathew is currently functioning as Associate Director for Land & Water Applications at Earth Observation Applications & Disaster Management Support Programme Office, in ISRO Head Quarters Bangalore. He is a Geoscientist with more than 25 years of experience in EO applications in Water Resources, Geoscience and Disaster Management domains.

He is currently involved with formulating programmes for Earth Observation application solutions in the domains of ground & surface water, and mineral exploration.

In his capacity as Associate Programme Director for ISRO’s Disaster Management Support, he is also associated with formulating new research programmes on the use of Space based inputs towards Disaster Risk Reduction.

His research has been primarily in quantifying the role of rainfall as a triggering factor for landslides and also in developing coupled hydrological - slope stability model for Himalayan terrain.

He has been instrumental in implementing the prototype landslide early warning system for rainfall induced landslides along the pilgrimage route corridors in the Himalaya.

He has been involved with the development of Crustal Deformation Monitoring programme in ISRO with the establishment of CORSs across the major thrusts in the Himalaya. His research also focused on integrating SAR interferometric data for estimating co-seismic deformation and for using coherence loss as an indicator for earthquake damage assessment.
