The Earth Observation Working Group (EO WG) aims to exchange the knowledge and lessons learned through discussion on comprehensive topics of Earth observation activities for climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster management, and other forms of practical data applications in the Asia-Pacific region. The group also seeks to promote earth science and ob- servation research networks and capacity building.
Following discussions in the EO WG, two initiatives, Sentinel Asia and Space Applications For Environment (SAFE) were established as frameworks for action. Sentinel Asia is a voluntary initiative to support disaster management activity in the Asia-Pacific region by applying WEB- GIS and space-based technologies, such as earth observation satellite data. SAFE, meanwhile, is also a voluntary Asia-Pacific initiative to encourage long-term environmental monitoring activities, including efforts to understand environmental changes and mitigate global warming hazards, by using space applications, especially remote sensing technology.
Activities
- Promote the use of earth observation technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster management, and other forms of practical data applications, and exchange information on earth observation activities.
- Undertake Sentinel Asia initiative
- Undertake SAFE initiative
