* 1. The first announcement of APRSAF-23 to be issued in May
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

As mentioned in the previous issue of News Mail, the 23rd session of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-23) will be held on November 15-18, 2016 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in the Philippines (http://www.sofitelmanila.com/). The first announcement of the APRSAF-23 includes a tentative schedule and the details of APRSAF Activities, and it will be published in mid-May.

APRSAF-23 will be jointly organized by the Republic of the Philippines Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines (DOST), the Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of the Philippines (DFA), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan (MEXT), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The main theme of APRSAF-23 is "Building a Future through Space Science, Technology, and Innovation."

* 2. Call for Proposals: APRSAF Side Event
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

As announced in the Extra Edition of the APRSAF News Mail, we are now calling for proposals for the APRSAF-23 Side Event ! An "APRSAF Side Event" is a meeting, conference, or similar event relating to the APRSAF's goals and objectives ; it is proposed and presented by APRSAF participating organizations during the APRSAF annual session.

* 3. News on APRSAF: a successful Space Environment and Kibo Utilization Workshop (SEKUW) opens the way for future Kibo missions.

The Space Environment and Kibo Utilization Workshop (SEKUW) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on April 18-19, 2016, and hosted by ANGKASA, which greatly contributed to the workshop's success . Proposals for future life science and space medicine experiments using the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" at the International Space Station (ISS) emerged through lively and engaging discussions. Representatives from Singapore participated in the SEUWG meeting for the first time since recently joining the SEUWG and Kibo-ABC .

* 4. News from APRSAF Community: The First Philippine-made 50kg Class Satellite: "DIWATA-1"

DIWATA-1: on April 27, 2016, the first Philippine-made satellite was successfully deployed by the JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) on the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" in the International Space Station (ISS), in cooperation with JAXA . DIWATA-1 is the Philippines's first microsatellite; it was designed, developed, and assembled by Filipino researchers and engineers, under the guidance of Japanese experts from Hokkaido and Tohoku Universities . This satellite is designed to provide real-time images for disaster risk management and other applications.

* 5. Space agency leaders at the SPIE Asia-Pacific Remote Sensing Symposium call for collaboration and consiste ncy when applying remote sensing technologies to Earth.
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

The 10th SPIE Asia-Pacific Remote Sensing Symposium was held in New Delhi on April 4-7, 2016. Leaders from the space agenc ies of several nations offered their perspectives on programs designed to monitor natural and manmade environmental impacts . The speakers emphasized the need for collaboration and the importance of Earth monitoring in improving conditions for humanity ; they focused on applications of remote sensing technologies designed to mitigate disasters and monitor global climate change.

* 6. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) held a conference on the use and operation of the small optical Earth Observing satellite, "VNREDSat-1."
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On March 18 2016, VAST held a conference on the use and operation of Vietnam's first small optical Earth Observing satellite, "VNREDSat-1," in Thái Nguyên City, Vietnam. The presentations focused mainly on techniques for controlling the navigation and operations of small earth observing satellites. There were also some proposals for ways to use the data gathered by VNREDSat-1.
