* 2. News on APRSAF: APRSAF-23 Date and Venue Announced

As posted in the previous News Mail, the twenty-third session of the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-23) will be held from November 15-18, 2016, at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, in the Philippines (http://www.sofitelmanila.com/en).

APRSAF-23 will be jointly organized by the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines (DOST), the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines (DFA), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The main theme of APRSAF-23 is "Building a Future through Space Science, Technology and Innovation."

* 3. News on APRSAF: Logo for Next Kibo-ABC Program Selected
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

Following the last two programs of Space Seeds for Asian Future (SSAF), the Kibo-ABC initiative will move forward to the next stage of small space experiment in the Kibo experiment module in the International Space Station. Asian Herb in Space (AHiS), proposed by the National Space Agency of Malaysia (ANGKASA), is a mission to launch basil seeds to Kibo to observe their germination in space and to return the seedlings to earth for further experiments and analysis. The logo for AHiS was selected by Kibo-ABC members. It was designed by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Thailand.

* 4. News from APRSAF Community: KiboCUBE Launch Opportunity (Application Deadline: March 31, 2016)

The following is the information on the CubeSat launch opportunity provided by the APRSAF community.

KiboCUBE Launch Opportunity (Application Deadline: March 31, 2016)

This is a reminder from JAXA that the United Nations/Japan Cooperation Programme on CubeSat Deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo) "KiboCUBE" is still accepting applications for the CubeSat deployment from the ISS.

* 6. LAPAN and UKSA Organize Workshop on Marine Monitoring
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On March 1, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), jointly with the British embassy in Indonesia and the UK Space Agency (UKSA), held a workshop on maritime monitoring with satellite applications in LAPAN. Based on the MoU on collaboration in civil space activities, the workshop was organized to explore the possibilities of cooperation between UKSA and Indonesian government agencies and/or private companies, joined by approximately 80 participants from LAPAN and other organizations in Indonesia, as well as some related entities from the UK.

In the workshop, a representative of UKSA said that the UK had a great deal of experience in the area of SAR satellite technology, and that it would be able to provide data taken by a developing SAR satellite, NovaSAR, for Indonesia's environment monitoring.

* 7. Space Camp Held in Taiwan
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On February 3, the National Space Organization of Taiwan (NSPO) announced that an educational event targeting primary school pupils, a space camp, was held at NSPO and in some universities. In the three-day camp, students were exposed to the latest knowledge on space and earth science, rocket propulsion, the basic mechanism of solar power generation, and satellite applications, such as the role of the Formosat-2 earth observation satellite and the Formosat series' contribution to humankind and the earth. They also experienced a water rocket experiment.

* 8. Satellite Design Contest to be Held in Turkey
+----------------------------------------------------------------+

On February 12, the Türksat Company announced that it was organizing a satellite design contest for university and postgraduate students in Turkey in September to raise awareness of satellite and space science. Participating students will have an opportunity to learn theoretical knowledge about satellites and the practical processes of satellite development through teamwork and mutual communication with companies in various fields. It is planned to conduct the contest annually.
