- JAXA-KARI Space Camp held in Korea
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Korea
Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) jointly held a space
camp for young students on August 20 and 21 in Daejeon,
Korea. Approximately 25 students from each country
participated in the event. They visited KARI and the Naro
Space Center and participated in hands-on activities,
including a model rocket contest.

3. Development of LAPAN-A2 completed
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On August 11, the National Institute of Aeronautics and
Space of Indonesia (LAPAN) announced that it had finished
the design, production, and validation of LAPAN-A2, a
microsatellite for Earth observation. The satellite is
scheduled to be launched by the Indian Polar Satellite
Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in 2013, equipped with an Automatic
Identification System (AIS) and radio equipment from an
Indonesian amateur radio organization (ORARI).

4. Malaysian ATSB develops an educational satellite, Pipit
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On July 30, a Malaysian state company, Astronautic
Technology (ATSB), announced that it had developed an
educational small satellite called "Pipit," previously known
as Femotosat, which allowed high school and university
students to learn necessary technologies for satellite
development. ATSB previously developed another small
satellite, Innosat, jointly with Malaysian universities.
Pipit is one-eighth (150 kg) the size of Innosat and applies
Innosat technologies, such as an on-board computer, an
electrical power subsystem, radio frequency communication,
an altitude detection system, and a CMOS optical camera.
ATSB expects Pipit to be used for a practical approach to
science technology education at many schools and in other
educational opportunities.

5. Indian government approves Mars mission
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On August 3, the Indian government approved a Mars mission
of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This goal
of this space science mission, following the Chandrayaan
mission to the Moon, is to put a probe in Mars' orbit to
study its atmosphere with a 25 kg payload. The estimated
cost of the mission is around $80 million. ISRO plans to
launch the spacecraft using the Polar Satellite Launch
Vehicle (PSLV) in November 2013.

6. LAPAN held a conference on RS in fisheries
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On July 19, in Bogor, Indonesia, the National Institute of
Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia (LAPAN) held a conference
on the development of remote sensing technology for marine
resources and fisheries. Related agencies and institutes
made presentations concerning the necessity of developing
remote sensing technology and sharing the information with
marine and fishery industries in order to optimize the use
of remote sensing data. Dr. Bambang S. Tejasukmana, Chairman
of LAPAN, stated that there are two major programs in the
remote sensing field: one program involves data provision
and acquisition technology, and the other involves the
development of RS technology in the areas of the environment,
agriculture, the marine industry, and disaster management.
Dr. Tejasukmana said that LAPAN would continue to develop
technologies to meet users' needs.
