2. GCOM-W1 & KOMPSAT-3 successfully launched
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
On May 18, 2012, Japanese Global Change Observation Mission
1st - Water "SHIZUKU" (GCOM-W1) and the Korean Multi-purpose
Satellite 3 (KOMPSAT-3) were successfully launched by the
H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 21.

GCOM-W1 is the first satellite of the GCOM series, and it
carries the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2
(AMSR2) - an instrument to observe water-related parameters
such as precipitation, water vapor, sea surface wind speed,
sea surface temperature, soil moisture, and snow depth.

KOMPSAT-3 carries an electro-optical camera, which will
provide high-resolution images. The acquired data will be
used for public safety purposes, land and resources
management, and disaster monitoring.
